Hello! Welcome to my website. I would like to begin by acknowledging that I am on the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, and am very fortunate to be able to be a guest on this land. My name is Talon Jonker and I am currently a Teacher Candidate at the University of Northern British Columbia. I am in the Secondary Years cohort, with a goal of teaching high school level social studies and/or history.

I was born and raised in Prince George and attended Salmon Valley Elementary, Heather Park Middle School, Shas Ti Kelly Road Secondary, and UNBC. Throughout high school I never really had a profession in mind but teaching was always something that I had interest in. After I graduated high school I was still not sure exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I tried several career choices out, including a Plumbing Foundations course and five years of line cooking. For the past two years I have been working as a School Age Leader and Team Lead at the YMCA in after school care. My time there has been wonderful and I’m very grateful of the experiences and relationships I have been able to foster with the children, parents, and staff. Working with kids ultimately solidified my decision to become a teacher, as I want to make a positive impact on as many lives as possible. I am looking forward to learning more about myself along this journey, and also more about Indigenous history and the steps needed to be taken towards reconciliation. I hope to offer students a safe and caring learning environment where they can grow and become the best versions of themselves. My University journey consisted of a Bachelor’s of Arts degree with a joint major in History and Political Science. I have a special interest for political philosophy and working class history. I am super excited to eventually be able to use the skills that I learned at university in a professional setting!

In my free time you will find me reading, hanging out with my dog, Ruben, or following my favourite sports teams (often times very painfully). Follow along for all things teaching!
